Home Oxygen Concentrators

Oxygen Concentrators are wonderful devices that have provided greater mobility to patients that are dependent upon an external oxygen supply to breathe. While traditionally these patients, such as those with COPD, would be home-bound or dependent upon hospitals or clinics. An oxygen concentrator allows patients more freedom to easily bring their oxygen concentrator along while they travel in vehicles, on foot, or even on public forms of transportation.

An oxygen concentrator actually extracts the oxygen from the air around you and concentrates it. The nitrogen in the air is then released into the surrounding ambient air. The oxygen concentrator then delivers this concentrated oxygen to the patient.

Traditional Oxygen Tanks versus Oxygen Concentrators

Traditional oxygen tanks simply store oxygen which is depleted when the tank is empty. An oxygen concentrator actually supplies oxygen without end as long as the power source is uninterrupted. The power source can be an electrical outlet in a home or car, or rechargeable batteries that allow mobility. Patients and caregivers should always ensure that batteries are fully charged before traveling.

There are many benefits of oxygen concentrators.

  • Oxygen concentrators are more economical than oxygen tanks.
  • Oxygen concentrators are safer as oxygen tanks.
  • Oxygen concentrators provide much more mobility due to size and weight.
  • You are not required to meet scheduled appointment to refill tanks with an oxygen concentrator.
  • Some portable oxygen concentrators are now allowed on board airlines that cross US airspace. Users should still check with each airline for specific requirements.

These oxygen concentrators have revolutionized the mobility and freedom for patients that require a continuous oxygen supply. These units are able to use the surrounding air, remove nitrogen, and concentrate and deliver the oxygen to the patients.

Invacare has just released a new version of the Perfecto 2 called the Perfecto 2V. This is an economy version with a price just above the Optium and Solstice, but comes standard with the oxygen sensor. Price is under $750 at http://www.vitalitymedical.com/Product/Invacare-Perfecto-2V-Oxygen-Concentrator-5-Liter-IRC5PPOV.html

Cant beat the low price of the Optium Concentrator and its high 8.5 psi output. The wheels allow you to move the Optium from room to room, going where you need to go when you need to. It also has a low power consumption rate to keep my power bill manageable.

Concentrator: Sequal Integra 10 EZ
Rating: 5 /5

The Sequal produces 10 LPM of oxygen output while using less power than the other comparable concentrators. It is on the noisy side, but I cant hear now anyway.
